Goolma have missed the opportunity of moving to outright first after going down in embarrassing fashion to defending premiers Bowlers.
As Stuart Bromley was banging 203 against competition leaders Centennial Hotel, a Goolma win would have put last season’s runners-up on top.
Although the champs had Mark Gorrie in their side, for once the Gulgong skipper wasn’t the cause of Goolma’s demise; unlike last season’s grand final in March where he scored a century and took a five-wicket haul.
The Bowlers’ seven bowlers all stepped up to the pitch and took wickets.
The best of the lot was Greg Reid who, coming off five wickets in Mudgee reserve grade cricket the day before, bagged 2-4 from five overs.
Another stand out was Dave Morrison whose short but lively spell of bowling had him take 2-9 from three.
Only Colin Doherty managed to get above 20. His 25 was the highlight of a disappointing batting card for Goolma who were dismissed for 87 in the 34th over.
In reply, Bowlers took about an hour and a half to chase down the runs.
Gorrie top scored with 34 and Morrison, after performing well with the ball earlier, posted 21 runs.
Bowlers made 4-90 with Tom Cooney taking 3-15 from four overs.
- RSL 5-157 def Mendooran 79
RSL and Mendooran have played the first Twenty20 match in Gulgong District Cricket Association history, even though there’s not a Twenty20 competition in Gulgong.
Due to the heat on Sunday, both skippers agreed to play the match as a Twenty20.
And from the result, maybe RSL should convince the GDCA of more Twenty20 matches after they enjoyed success at Mendooran’s expense.
Batting first, RSL posted a very competitive 5-157 from their 20 overs.
Jared Clulow hit another half-century as he and Nathan Lane (39) put on quite a partnership for the opening stand.
Nathan’s father David, enjoyed the time in the son, as he smacked seven fours in his quick-fire 34.
Dane Cooper (1-17 off four) and Jamie Sharpe (0-25 off four) were spared from RSL’s onslaught with the bat, returning tidy figures for a Twenty20 match.
In the run chase, it was all RSL or Andrew Benetti for that matter.
Benetti took 4-38 from four overs as Mendooran were dismissed for 79.
Dimi Savoulidis top scored with 32 but that was the only notable score for Mendooran.
Each of RSL’s five bowlers were wicket-takers with Benetti the best by far.
