Mudgee District Cricket Association is on the lookout for a new president but the trouble is, no one has put their hand up to take on the job.
Incumbent president Mark Barnes decided he will not seek re-election at tonight’s annual general meeting and will vacate his post due to work commitments.
However, the position could be left vacant for some time as no one has applied, in writing, their interest for the top job.
Unless someone puts their name forward at tonight’s AGM, the MDCA will be left without a captain steering the ship.
But it is not just the president’s position that needs to be filled.
MDCA will be on the lookout for possibly a new vice-president and secretary with no one, at this stage, applying for those positions.
The only positions on the committee that received written nominations were treasurer and assistant secretary.
The three positions for under 21s selectors have also received nominations.
Barnes hopes the roles get filled up at tonight’s AGM.
He enjoyed his one year as president.
“I love my cricket and I loved being part of it,” he said.
“We had a pretty good year but it just got too much with work. I manage my own business and it gets busy.”
Barnes wasn’t sure who would put their hand up to replace him but he does have some suggestions.
“I would like to see some of the guys from first grade step up and take over,” Barnes said.
“I thought guys from the juniors [district cricket association] might have a run but I haven’t heard anything.”
Last summer was an interesting one for Mudgee cricket.
It started with only three teams nominating for first grade before Woolpack Hotel came in at the 11th hour to make it four sides.
The annual Super Eights tournament did not go ahead due to a lack of organisation.
And in a joint venture with Gulgong District Cricket Association, the MDCA helped with the organisation of the Australian Cricket Masters Twenty20 match.
While on the field, Mudgee made the SCG Country Shield fourth round, won the annual Australia Day Challenge against Gulgong, performed OK in the Western Premier League and finished last in the President’s Cup carnival.
The association’s AGM will be held in the bingo room at Club Mudgee at 6.30pm tonight.
